Ukraine Election Watch

Neither the incumbent Mr. Yanukovich or the challenger Mr. Yuschenko has gotten more than 50% of the vote in Ukraine's presidential election, so they go to to a runoff on Nov. 21. Mr. Yanukovich is a semi-communist, and advocates political reunion with Russia. Mr. Yuschenko is a reformer, and advocates closer ties to the EU, NATO, and the West. There were around 24 contenders in the presidential election. With 94.4% of precincts counted, pro-Kremlin Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych had 40.12% of the vote, and top opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko had 39.15%, the Central Election Commission said Monday...turnout was about 75%. For some reason ;) Ukraine's government is not publishing official results, describing the tally as "unofficial preliminary results." My wife is visiting Ukraine right now. She says there's vibrant political activity all over the place in the capital Kiev, where her brother lives. They say people stayed up all night to vote in...

Reflections on the elections

To start with, I'm going to blockquote a SojoMail I received from Jim Wallis: Progressive faith did not lose this election by Jim Wallis Religion was a big factor in this election, and "moral values" were named as a key issue for voters in the exit polls. On the Republican side, George W. Bush talked comfortably and frequently about his personal faith and ran on what his conservative religious base called the "moral issues." On the Democratic side, Senator John Kerry invoked the New Testament story of the Good Samaritan, talked about the importance of loving our neighbors, and said that faith without works is dead - but only began talking that way at the very end of his campaign. We've now begun a real debate in this country over what the most important "religious issues" are in politics, and that discussion will continue far beyond this election. The Religious Right fought to keep the focus on gay marriage and abortion and even said t...

Some tech stats for election 2004

CNN.com Election 2004 Using Java and Flash as well as HTML, CNN has set up a pretty nifty looking election results site. Using Netcraft , I determined that CNN.com runs Apache on Linux. Netcraft also has some interesting news about DOS attacks on electoral-vote.com, an electoral college prediction site; plus, the author of the site is Andrew Tanenbaum, the author of Minix.

The Conservative Case for Voting Democratic

The Conservative Case for Voting Democratic By "conservative", we mean limited government, free markets, and peace. The main reason, of course, is because Kerry will try his level best to keep US out of wars (instead of using war as a means to solve problems, which is how the neo-conservatives think). But for those of us with a libertarian bent, it is also good to know that there are several sound economic reasons for voting Kerry as well. CATO does a better job than anyone else demonstrating what those reasons are.
